In May 2019 my darling Mum was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic ovarian cancer. It had spread to her liver and as she put it, she was 'riddled' with cancer. Just over 2 months later she passed away. Ovarian cancer is known as the 'silent killer', as symptoms often only appear in the later stages of cancer growth. Even when symptoms do appear, many women are not aware of the potential life-threatening nature and dismiss them as benign conditions.

To say that the incredible work of The Eve Appeal is close to my heart is a massive understatement. Their work in raising awareness of the five gynaecological cancers and funding of research is so important. In particular their 'Ask Eve' service - an information service, run by specialist nurses - plays a crucial role in advising on symptoms and testing.

What is the Get Lippy campaign and The Eve Appeal?

Funding and awareness of gynaecological diseases remains low. The Eve Appeal is a UK charity which funds ground-breaking research focusing on developing effective methods of risk prediction, earlier detection and screening for the five gynaecological cancers. As a result, 58 women are diagnosed and 21 die each and every day from a gynaecological cancer in the UK. This is why VOTARY is helping to raise awareness and support this charity.

What are the five gynaecological cancers?

Cervical cancer symptoms

• Bleeding between periods or after sex
• Pain during sex
• Unpleasant smelling vaginal discharge

Ovarian cancer symptoms

• Persistent bloating
• Persistent pelvic/abdominal pain
• Difficulty eating/feeling full quickly, or feeling nauseous
• Change in bowel habits
• Needing to urinate more

Vaginal cancer symptoms

• Bleeding between periods, post-menopause/after sex
• Bad-smelling/blood-stained discharge
• Pain during sex
• A vaginal lump
• Persistent vaginal itch

Vulval cancer symptoms

• A lasting itch
• Pain or soreness
• Thickened, raised, red, white or dark patches on the skin of the vulva
• Lump on the vulva

Womb cancer symptoms

• Bleeding in between periods, after menopause or after sex
• Heavier periods
• Vaginal discharge - pink/watery/brown or prune colour
